his listing is for a vintage F.E. Olds & Son (Los Angeles) baritone horn. The serial number is 119451. It was produced in c.1954, just before the company relocated to Fullerton, CA. This is a 3 valve horn with a detachable front/forward facing bell.
I'm a sax player, so not personally able to attest to how this horn plays, but I took it along to my gig the other day to have the trombonist (a very accomplished player) check it out. He confirmed that it was in good playing condition and seemed quite impressed with both the tone and intonation. He mentioned that it was a heavy horn, which I believe he meant in a positive way. All that being said, you might want to bring it to your tech for a thorough cleaning and once over, but it is playable as is.
Physically speaking, this horn is in overall very good condition. It is not perfect by any means, but it isn't totally bashed up like so many you see. There are small dings, pings, and nicks throughout, and one good sized dent on the bottom bow. The spine of the bow is pushed in slightly on one end. The rim of the bell has a couple of minor creases. On the plus side, I don't see any resoldered joints. The lead pipe has not been bent or damaged in any way. All of the slides are free. It has very good compression, as it produces a very audible 'pop' when you pull the slides. The valves can all be unscrewed and removed, but I was not able to unscrew the lower valve caps. I didn't try too awful hard though, so I doubt it'll be a major issue. The pistons are all moving freely and rebounding quickly.
Cosmetically speaking, this horn definitely looks vintage! It was originally lacquered, but most of that has worn off, allowing the brass to tarnish naturally. Please note that it has the name "Mary" professionally engraved on it just above the lead pipe. It is in super small letters, so barely noticeable.
This horn comes in a modern plastic shell case. The case is in fair condition. It has minor scuffs on the exterior, but no damage to the outer shell. One of the five latches is broken (half of it is missing), but it closes securely with just the other four. The interior is clean and odor free, however the fabric is loose in several spots. It could easily be glued down again with minimal effort.
There is no mouthpiece, and no other accessories included with this horn.
