    Description

The Ohio Match Company was started in 1895 in Wadsworth, Ohio. From blue-tipped blue wooden matches it branched into paper matchbooks, producing 300 million wooden and paper matches at its peak in the 1940s. The factory and warehouse covered 18 acres and it was the third largest match manufacturer in the world at that time, behind Akron’s Diamond Match Company. To acknowledge the company’s contributions to the city of Wadsworth, a Blue Tip Festival was started in 1982 even though the company closed a few years later, having gone through a chain of ownership and the flooding of the American market by cheaper Asian wooden and paper matches.
Ohio Match was not known as an innovative manufacture (what can you do with matches?) but they did attempt to crash the double edge safety razor blade market in the 1930s. That was started by King Gillette in 1903, in particular the slot design that made it easier to load the blade into a safety razor. These blades were made of carbon steel and did not come in some sort of dispenser, further dating them to the 1930s. There is a picture on the top part of the card and behind every package.
Each blade is the standard safety razor size and there are five per pack and 12 packs on this card. The card measures 12 x 6 inches (30.5 x 15 cm). It is in very good condition given its vintage age, with the second “O” in Ohio crinkled slightly but very visible and the bottom left-hand corner slightly bent. The rest of the edges are very good.
Will show well in a recreated drug, general, or country store and the size of the card means it will fit in places where other, larger advertising display cards will not. The cardboard easel stand on the back has never been unfolded but could be used as well. This could also make an interesting bit of décor in a Depression or 40s era room (maybe framed because the card and blades are only about 3/8 inch thick), or in a recreated gas or service station to go with your other pertroliana/personal care items. You could even try to shave with these blades, because, believe it or not, today's multiple razor blades do not shave better than a nice, sharp single blade. Shipped free in the US.
